The Words and Picture that Inspired Change

As a high school World History and Sociology teacher I always enjoyed working with my students. I will also add that I enjoyed working with any student. When you have a passion for helping you tend to take as many opportunities that come your way.  I spent 13 years working as a teacher and my best days were the ones that ultimately caused my resignation.

Somewhere around my 6th year I started to read business and “self-help” books. Some authors are so inspirational that they can get you to believe you can stop traffic if you are passionate enough.  Well, it so happens I ended up being out of a job because of those guys.  Did I mention that I am happy about that? I am.

As a teacher I always told my students to strive for more in life.  Had it not been for one “smart ass” that said “What it is you do to strive for more for yourself?” Firefly Event Photography & Entertainment, LLC would possibly be someone else’s business.  Friction sharpens us but only if we apply it right.  Man, I could have tossed that kid out of class but the words hit home. Yes, I was putting in the effort, but I could do more. I should strive to be better and challenge myself.  I was forever changed by those words.

I hope that some of these words will help you on your path as I share a bit of my journey. Simply put Firefly EPE was invented because I believe that all students should have a professional image that they can access at any time from their high school days.  This blog will not only be tips related to our product but the story of why I do what I do for kids.

Here is the picture that inspired what we do at Firefly Event Photography & Entertainment, LLC. From Gibbs High Homecoming 1990. Go Gladiators!!!

Elements of the School Dance: The Food

September 26, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

The Food

“When in doubt, give ‘em Publix chocolate chip cookies!”

Light snacks, heavy food, beverages and a chocolate fountain, I have seen them all. My favorite? Pinwheels, man those are good.  Homecoming dances usually draw a hungrier crowd than prom due to the meaning of the night.  I know that kids won’t eat cookies all night something heavier may be needed. The food tends to round out the event. If you have worked a dance before you know kids will mow down some food.  It’s always the smallest freshmen that are about to hit that growth spurt at the table packing it away. Mix it up, have plenty but don’t waste.  Also having plenty of water is a must. Once that deejay gets crankin’ and those kids get to sweating you will need the hydration just from a safety perspective.

Q: Do you have plenty of water available?

Q: Is this an event where you need to go heavy or light with the food?

Q: Did you tell your purchasers what type of food will be there? You should so they know what to expect.

Elements of the High School Dance: The Deejay

The Deejay

“Music has the power to bring people together. You want even more togetherness? Play Cupid Shuffle”

A deejay has the hardest job. It isn’t easy pleasing a crowd of kids.  Yet, the best do it with an ease that is amazing.  Find that person and respect their developed talent. Always hire a talented deejay.  Anyone can play music and crossfade but a deejay worth good cash is an artist that your students will enjoy.   Their portfolio of mixes should be available for you to hear.  They should have recent samples also. There is nothing worse than a deejay that stops practicing because of too much work. Even professional athletes need an off season.  Find the person that will be the centerpiece to your event and isn’t afraid to “rock the crowd.”

Q: Are you purchasing on cost, talent, or service?

Q: What is the date on their latest online sample?

Q: Are they willing to come in and connect with your committee so they can make the best decision?

Elements of the High School Dance: The Pictures

The Pictures

“Everyone deserves a professional picture without it being hijacked for a high ransom”

There is nothing about your night that will last longer than the pictures.  As our memeory fades of the night the images taken remind us of the great people in the school. This is a great opportunity for a school to add some separation from the old rubber stamping school dances of your rival down the road.  Make your event great by having photo booths that are creative (not just a black background), plenty of photographers, and plenty of areas to take creative images.  Then get on it! Once the music has stopped there are only memories and yet school committees aren’t working with companies that can handle capturing and securing them.  Do you know how often a kid loses his phone, their computer dies or they mistakenly erase files?  All those memories are down the drain so you can forget about #TBT (Throwback Thursday) years from now. Visit Firefly Event Photography www.fireflyepe.com for great solutions for your students.

Q: How can having a professional photography company enhance your event?

Q: Are your attendees impressed with the picture company?

Q: What results are you expecting when you work with a photography company?

Elements of the School Dance: The Decorations and Theme

The Decorations

“A great theme isn’t too costly but a terrible on is!”

The theme is a yearly choice that seems to cost more than it impresses. What will people see and feel as they walk in to the event? What do you want them to feel as the enjoy the event? There is a ton of paper and plastic waste when it comes to creating the right theme, think about recycling.  Try to use themes that will create very little waste or excess. You will save big.  It may be better to have a service help create the theme with a lightshow or video screens than a lot of paper products.  With so many options for lights any room can be transformed with colors and black or white drapes.

Q: How can we save on decorations and put that savings to good use elsewhere?

Q: Can we make a purchase that will serve more than one dance?

Q: What can our vendors offer that will help with our desired savings?

Elements of the School Dance: The Venue

August 29, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

The Venue

“Beautiful locations are always a wonderful thing, but locations create lasting memories are even better”

Venues can eat up most of your budget so choose wisely.  It may be better to enjoy a less expensive place that serves all of your needs than a more expensive place where you needs are met but you have to give up the extra gifts that can go to your ticket buyers.  Think safety, fun, and cost.  I have witnessed schools that can turn a gym into a wonderland for ¼ of the cost of a hotel or resort.  Use some of the extra money on some lasting memento and the other to improve the school.

Q: What are your venue alternatives to doing it the old way?

Q: If you are forced to use the same venue what will you do to make an upgrade?

Q: What do you like about the venue you have chosen?
